What is a .mcpack file?
A
.mcpack is a resource pack, behavior pack, or skin pack for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. It is a ZIP file with a different name, and Minecraft knows how to unpack it on its own. You never need to unzip it yourself.
You may see two similar file types:
・.mcaddon bundles several packs into one file, usually a resource pack and a behavior pack that work together.
・.mcworld is a whole world save, not a pack.
All three open the same way: open the file, and Minecraft imports it. This guide covers the mcpack case, since that is what a texture pack comes as. Java Edition cannot open a mcpack. Only Bedrock Edition can.Windows 10 and 11: double-click the file
1. Download the
.mcpack file. Your browser saves it to the Downloads folder.
2. Open File Explorer and go to Downloads.
3. Double-click the mcpack file.
4. Minecraft (or the Minecraft Launcher) opens. A message at the top of the screen says the import started, then Successfully imported.
If Windows asks which app to use, pick Minecraft or Minecraft Launcher. If neither is in the list, right-click the file, choose Open with, and look for Minecraft there.
This works for Minecraft installed from the Microsoft Store or the Xbox app. It does not work in Java Edition, which uses .zip packs instead.Android: tap the download
1. Download the
.mcpack file in Chrome, Firefox, or another browser.
2. Tap the download notification, or open the Files app and go to Downloads.
3. Tap the mcpack file.
4. If your phone asks which app to use, choose Minecraft.
5. Minecraft opens and shows Successfully imported.
If a file manager or ZIP app opens instead of Minecraft, go back to the Files app. Long-press the mcpack file, tap Share or Open with, and choose Minecraft from the list.iPhone and iPad: open it from the Files app
1. Download the
.mcpack file in Safari. Tap Download when Safari asks.
2. Tap the download arrow at the top of Safari, then tap the file. You can also open the Files app and go to Downloads.
3. Tap the mcpack file. Minecraft opens and imports it.
4. If Minecraft does not open, tap the Share button on the file and pick Minecraft from the app list.
Some apps, like Mail or Discord, cannot hand the file to Minecraft directly. Save it to Files first, then open it from there.
On iPad, the same Files app steps apply.Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch: no direct import
Consoles do not have a file browser for Minecraft. You cannot download a
.mcpack file on an Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch and open it. Any site that promises a direct console install is wrong.
Two real options exist:
・Marketplace packs. Anything bought or claimed in the in-game Marketplace works on every console. Custom mcpack files are not on the Marketplace.
・Realms. Import the mcpack on a Windows PC or phone that uses the same Microsoft account. Open the Realm's settings, go to Resource Packs, and activate the pack. Everyone who joins that Realm, including console players, downloads the pack when they connect.
Realms is a paid subscription, and the Realm owner has to set the pack from a PC or phone. There is no free, offline way to use a custom mcpack on console. How to turn the pack on after importing
Importing only adds the pack to your library. You still have to turn it on. There are two places to do that.
Every world: Settings > Global Resources
1. From the main menu, open Settings.
2. Choose Global Resources.
3. Open My Packs, select the pack, and tap Activate.
The pack now applies to every world you play, including servers and Realms.
One world only: Edit World > Resource Packs
1. On the Worlds screen, tap the pencil icon next to the world.
2. Choose Resource Packs.
3. Open My Packs, select the pack, and tap Activate.
Packs set on a world take priority over your global packs. When several packs are active, the one at the top of the Active list wins wherever two packs change the same texture. Use the arrow buttons on the pack to move it up or down.
Not working?
If nothing happens when you tap the file, if Minecraft says the import failed, or if the pack never shows up in My Packs, the cause is usually a file association, an incomplete download, Java Edition, or an old game version. Our .mcpack not opening fix guide walks through each cause with steps for every device.
